If you are planning a holiday in Egypt from Europe, one of the first things to sort out is the visa. The good news is that the process is simple and, for most European travellers, can be done online in a few minutes. This guide explains the Egypt visa for European travellers: who needs one, the options available, how much it costs and how to apply.
Please note: entry rules can change, so always confirm the latest requirements with your Egyptian embassy or the official government portal before you travel. Our team is happy to help you check.
Do European travellers need a visa for Egypt?
Yes. Most European nationals, including travellers from the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries, need a tourist visa to enter Egypt. It is a straightforward single entry visa that allows a stay of up to 30 days.
Your three main options
European visitors usually choose one of three routes:
- The Egypt e-Visa, applied for online before you travel. This is the easiest and most popular option.
- Visa on arrival, bought at the airport when you land.
- A visa from the Egyptian embassy in your home country, useful for longer or special stays.
The Egypt e-Visa (recommended)
The official Egypt e-Visa portal lets you apply online, upload a copy of your passport and pay by card. Approval usually takes a few days, and you receive the visa by email to print and bring with you. Applying in advance means you can walk straight to the immigration desk on arrival instead of queuing to buy a visa. Always apply through the official government website to avoid unofficial fees.
Visa on arrival
Many European passport holders can also buy a visa on arrival at major airports such as Cairo, Hurghada and Marsa Alam. You pay at a bank kiosk in the arrivals hall before you reach passport control, receive a sticker for your passport, then pass through immigration. Bring the fee in cash, ideally in US dollars.
Cost and validity
The standard tourist visa costs around 25 US dollars for a single entry and is valid for a stay of up to 30 days. A multiple entry visa is available for a higher fee if your trip involves leaving and re entering the country.
The South Sinai exception
If you are travelling only to the South Sinai resorts, such as Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab or Nuweiba, and staying up to 15 days, you may be given a free entry permit on arrival instead of a full visa. This permit does not cover trips to the rest of the country, so if you plan to see the Pyramids or travel further afield you will still need the standard tourist visa.
Documents you need
- A passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
- At least one blank page for the visa.
- A passport photo for embassy applications.
- Proof of onward travel and accommodation may occasionally be requested.
Tips for a smooth arrival
Apply for the e-Visa a week or two before you fly, keep a printed copy with your travel documents, and carry the visa fee in cash as a backup. Having your hotel or cruise details written down also helps at the immigration desk. While you prepare, our guides on what to pack for Egypt and whether Egypt is safe for tourists are worth a read.
