Egypt is a year-round destination, but when you go changes the trip completely. Here's how to pick the right season for what you want to see — temples, the Nile, the desert or the Red Sea.
The short answer: October to April
For most travellers, the cooler months from October to April are ideal. Days are warm and comfortable — perfect for walking through Karnak, exploring the Valley of the Kings, or spending a morning at the Pyramids without the punishing summer heat. This is peak season for good reason.
The trade-off is that the big sites are busier and prices are higher, especially around Christmas and New Year. Booking a private tour helps here — you start earlier and move at your own pace, well ahead of the coach groups.
Season by season
Winter (December – February)
The most popular time. Cairo and Luxor are pleasantly warm by day and cool at night, so bring layers. Aswan and the Red Sea stay mild and sunny. This is the best window for combining sightseeing with the desert.
Spring (March – April)
Arguably the sweet spot — warm, clear and slightly less crowded than midwinter. Ideal for a Nile cruise, when afternoons on deck are comfortable rather than scorching.
Summer (May – September)
Hot, especially in Upper Egypt, where Luxor and Aswan can climb past 40°C. It's not impossible — we simply shift the schedule earlier, build in rest, and lean on the Red Sea, which is glorious in summer. Prices drop and the sites are quieter, so it suits travellers who don't mind the heat.
Autumn (October – November)
The heat eases and the crowds haven't peaked yet. Another excellent window, particularly for a first visit that mixes Cairo, the Nile and a few days on the coast.
What about the Red Sea?
The Red Sea works year-round. The water stays warm even in winter, which makes it the perfect second half to a cooler-season history trip — temples first, then a few days of sun, snorkelling and doing nothing at all.
A note on Ramadan
During the holy month, some restaurants and shops adjust their hours, and the atmosphere shifts — often beautifully. Sightseeing continues as normal, and your guide will help you navigate the changes. If you'd prefer a fuller range of dining, we'll factor the dates into your plan.
